As I was working on my new book this morning, I ran across this Scripture from 2 Corinthians 4: 8-9 which says, “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and again and keep going.”

This imagery, almost of a boxer in a ring, stepping up to his opponent, matching wits, facing fears, getting knocked down and then getting up again, reminded me of what we all go through in this big game of life. We just survived a few rounds as we watched our political leaders get in the ring and duke it out.  We may or may not have found our favorite still standing, but the fact remains that God has blessed us with the opportunity to get in the ring.  We can step up, jump in, climb on board nearly any arena we choose because we have the freedom to do so.

When I get in the ring and face a challenge, I know I won’t always win.  I know that sometimes I will simply hope to survive, or hope the bell goes off before I get knocked out cold.  I believe though that the purpose of my life and maybe the purpose of each of our lives, is to figure out who the challengers are, and then determine how we’ll prepare to meet them.  Our job is to get back in the ring each time knowing full well that we aren’t there alone.

Yes, we have God in our midst, but we also have each other.  We have each person who is willing to stand up and give us encouragement when we’re tempted to quit.  We have family members who know us and cheer for us and we have something deeper, something planted inside of us that was divinely inspired…an eternal lamp that was lit and a flame that though it may waver, though it may even get dim at times, never goes out.

I encourage all of you, no matter what your challenges may be to press on!  Stand firm in your faith and keep walking toward your goal.  You’ve got a fighting chance each time you’re willing to step into the ring.  Go on…show ’em what ya got!
