Did you wake up this morning full of energy, alive with the Spirit, ready to take on the world in a big way? You might as well be wearing a cape with a big red letter “S” on it because nothing is stopping you today. Isn’t that right? No? Not so much? Me either!
Some days, I forget who I am. I focus on what I didn’t get done yesterday. I look out at the vast ocean of all that remains still aloof, still out there somewhere with no life raft in sight. I ponder what might have been, what could have been, what I thought would be, and it washes over me like so much emptiness. Before I know it, I simply slump over, not quite ready to face one more taste of salt, one more pie-in-the-sky hope. Blue is the best description. Low energy, down in the mouth, nobody loves me, I’m going out and eat worms kind of gloominess. I feel like Charlie Brown on a bad day.
Charlie Brown aptly said, “This is my depressed stance. When you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better. If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to stand like this.”
The fact is, the blessing is, that all those blue moments do pass. By the grace of God you and I both step aside from our own personal passion to commit gloom and doom and start straightening up. Sometimes we get a direct word from God that sounds something like this, “Straighten Up! Do you think I’ve left the room?”
God has not left the room or the beach or the elevator or wherever you happen to be standing. He’s right there, watching you torture yourself into blueness, wondering what it is that makes you feel He’s not noticing you. “Hello, I’m still here. HELLO, I”M STILL HERE!” Sometimes He has to shout at us because we can slip into our little slump with such focus, we forget to look up.
The fact is, you’re not going to have rich, rewarding vibrant days EVER, if you don’t remember who you are. You’re a Kingdom child, a beloved, honored, worthy person. When you remember that, the oceans are teeming with life, the life rafts are everywhere, and you realize that all you have to do is stand tall and hold on because those blues are already beginning to fade. You’re surrounded with an ocean of Grace and all you have to do is be the Salt.
Okay…off we go…stretching, smiling, believing in all that today has to bring!
