Sure, I know you’re thinking I made a mistake there.  I must have meant Touched by an Angel, like that popular TV show still airing on some channels.  That  show offered another perspective to those who are still wondering if God actually plays a role in our personal lives.  It just may be that angels are indeed one of God’s angles for getting to us and helping to clear our minds so we can march off in a new direction.  I certainly hope so.

Look at the story of Jacob when he wrestled with an angel.

24-25 But Jacob stayed behind by himself, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he couldn’t get the best of Jacob as they wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob’s hip out of joint.

26 The man said, “Let me go; it’s daybreak.”

Jacob said, “I’m not letting you go ’til you bless me.”

27 The man said, “What’s your name?”

He answered, “Jacob.”

28 The man said, “But no longer. Your name is no longer Jacob. From now on it’s Israel (God-Wrestler); you’ve wrestled with God and you’ve come through.”

29 Jacob asked, “And what’s your name?”

The man said, “Why do you want to know my name?” And then, right then and there, he blessed him.

30 Jacob named the place Peniel (God’s Face) because, he said, “I saw God face-to-face and lived to tell the story!”

It’s that new direction, that new angle, wrestling with God to get where you’re supposed to go that I’m actually musing about today.  What if you’re feeling stuck?  What if you’ve tried every angle you can think of and you’re still mystified that life hasn’t changed?  What then? How can you rename yourself, rename your idea or opportunity, and get a new direction?

Sometimes it helps to simply redefine the problem.  If you’re always focusing on a lack of money or a fruitless effort, then maybe it’s time to rename the issue, focus on it in a new way.  What little thing can you change?  What is it that is throwing your hip so out of  joint you can’t move successfully?  Redefine, realign, get a new spine-tingling idea and run with it again.  Will it work?  Maybe.  If you’ve stayed in the same place using the same excuses for a long time now, then it seems you have nothing to lose.  You can search the new angles, wrestle with angels, or stay stuck.

You probably have friends who look at you and think, “Why doesn’t Mary create home parties, she’s so gifted with home decor?”  Or, “Why doesn’t Bill get out from behind his computer and go into something where he meets people face to face, he’s such a gregarious person? ”   Sometimes you can’t see for yourself, what the next step is, but others can.  They see you as a success.  Other times, you’ve got the idea already, but you keep wrestling with it in a way that doesn’t get to the next step.  Your hip is simply out of joint and so you lay low.  Stand up!  Move on!  You have incredible options.

I’m working on these ideas for myself today, wrestling with my angels, maybe even my demons…trying to figure out a new angle.  I know it’s there even if I don’t know its name.   Perhaps I’ll just rename it “Opportunity” and see where it takes me.  Be blessed today.

    Thanks for the encouragement, Karen.
Wrestling with God, for me, is never a pleasant thought. At my best, I like to think that I’m obedient. In reality, however, that isn’t always the case. Here’s my new angle: Lord, let your presence bless my life (2 Sam. 6:11) Simple and to the point. On to those incredible options!

Debra, Thanks for that gentle thought. We’re all here together trying to figure out how to make the angles a little smoother so we can see the whole picture. Just thinking of me here, walking with you.
