There’s a simple little word in English that I think is kind of fascinating. It’s the big word UP! We use it in interesting ways too. “What’s Up?” we ask someone. Or, “I’m just not UP today,” we might say. “There’s no where to go, but UP” is another thought. I also enjoy the little adage that floats around on the internet about how the Devil groans the moment you get UP each day. So maybe it’s a good day to discover what else is up. Now that we’ve risen to a new day, thank God, and we’re up, what will it take to get our thoughts and feelings UP as well?
I love the translation from the Message for Proverbs 3:20. It says, ” Dear friend, guard clear thinking and common sense with your life; don’t for a minute lose sight of them. They’ll keep your soul alive and well, they’ll keep you fit and attractive. You’ll travel safely, you’re neither tire nor trip. You’ll take afternoon naps, without a worry, you’ll enjoy a good night’s sleep. No need to panic over alarms or surprises, or predictions that doomsday’s just around the corner, because God will be right there with you; he’ll keep you safe and sound.”
I’m really UP with this one. I love the idea that it’s still okay to employ common sense and clear thinking to the variety of experiences life brings. It’s so easy to get swept up in the things we don’t easily grasp, wondering if someone else knows more about us than we know about ourselves. The truth is no one knows you better than you do, apart from God of course, who kindly keeps some of your truth to Himself, to make life easier for you. At least, I suspect He must because I’m sure I don’t want to know the whole truth about myself. Anyway, with His help, my soul is alive and well and I can go about all the things I do safely and tirelessly. Of course, my physical self may get weary, but my soul just keeps getting UP with what God has in mind for me.
No matter where you live on the planet, it’s often not easy to keep your spirits up. The doomsday feeling hits every time another earthquake happens, another murder is reported, another person goes homeless. Those things are realities and we’re all left to deal with them, but keep in mind that you’re inner self has a protective coating that steps aside from what’s happening that might discourage you. It’s protecting you from sinking into despair because God wants more for you than that. He wants you to experience His spirit within you in such a way that you feel safe, knowing that He has gone before you, that He’s right next to you, that He is indeed within you.
So let’s be UP with this. We have an incredible resource in the One who created us, Who sees us with all our warts and still says, “Wow! Look at what my kid is doing today. I am so UP on this kid! Nothing could ever make me walk away!”
Okay, then. Your Dad is looking out for you, so go on…do some big thinking, take a trip or take a nap, but be at peace. It’s a Great Day for Up as Dr. Seuss once wrote, so let’s get out there and help each other smile. Looks like a win-win to me!
