The following post is from my friend and author, Rebecca Barlow Jordan. You’ll find her new book, Day-votions with Your Faithful Father on Amazon. It’s 90 days of powerful moments with God.
“Prove it!” someone asks. ”Is God really faithful?”
I could tell you about God’s faithfulness…
When my husband resigned as a pastor with no place to go;
when our marriage hit the wall; or
when depression threatened my future.
But that would involve my experiences. (And that’s only a few of them)
I’d Rather Do This
I’d rather point you to my faithful, heavenly Father’s heart, to the truths in God’s Word,
and to the promises tucked inside His unchangeable character.
How Do You Know If God Is Really Faithful?
Does God really care about your needs? Is He faithful to help when you don’t know how or what to pray? Will He give you strength when you’re tired of trying? Will God give you peace when all you see is chaos?
Is He faithful to give you a fresh start? When fear or loneliness stalk you, will He comfort you? Will God give you wisdom when you don’t know what to do? Can you talk to a Holy God like an intimate friend? Does He really want you to succeed?
Who Wants to Be Considered Needy?
Someone once said to me, “Christians don’t have problems (or needs).”
Really? I don’t know about you, but my life has been filled with problems–er, challenges–from Day 1.
Even though we don’t like to admit it, aren’t we all needy? Most of us consider needs as unwanted enemies. But not our faithful Father. He knows that we can do nothing apart from His intervention; yet don’t we constantly try to meet the deepest needs of our lives on our own?
Been there, done that. Often.
Is God Really Faithful to Meet Our Needs?
At times our needs line up like fence posts trying to imprison us. But our Father’s faithfulness knows no boundaries. He breaks through every barrier.
Our faithful Father sees our needs and concerns differently because He created us. He knows how helpless we are without Him.
But what if God used your needs as personal invitations from Him to experience His faithfulness in a greater way? He already has the supply–and is the Supply–for all our needs before we even recognize the problem or even ask for help. And He longs to meet those needs for us.
But don’t just take my word for it.
Is God Really Faithful to Everyone?
Here’s the apostle Paul’s testimony in the Bible, no doubt drawn from years of experiencing God’s faithfulness, whether in times of famine or plenty; through success or persecution:
And my God will meet all your needs according to the richness of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19 NIV).
The writer of Hebrews further testifies to God’s faithful activity:
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need (Hebrews 4:16 NIV).
And the Bible is filled with so many more promises.
God Has Nothing to Prove
God doesn’t need to prove His faithfulness to us. All of creation can testify to His unchangeable character. He invites us to know His faithfulness in a thousand ways. Experiencing His faithfulness through the meeting of our needs is only one of those ways.
Our Faithful Father wants to meet our deepest needs, whether we classify the need simply as more of Him, or as a concern in critical areas of our lives on earth. He desires our intimacy when we’re faithless, when we’re scared, and when we’re hurting. He is faithful in His actions because He is faithful to His very name (s)–just because of who He Is.
But don’t just take my word for it.
Take His.¹
