September 11th has been designated as Grandparent’s Day. It’s a day set aside to honor those people who came before us, perhaps carved a path for us to follow, or at least filled us with cookies and good stories. All of that is fine, but it strikes me now that there’s something especially joyful about being a grandparent, that is, getting to the stage when you can consider yourself grand. Think about it. Grand means you’re magnificent, impressive, and amazing. It means that people listen to your awe-inspiring stories because you’ve lived a part of history, they know nothing about. It means you know more than a few of life’s secrets, and you can share them any time you wish.
No doubt, you were a good parent. You raised your kids to be responsible human beings. They have managed to make their way in the world, find mates for themselves and create tiny aspects of their own personalities. It all adds up to the big moment, when you go from good to grand. Now as you cuddle up with that sweet little human who has only been on planet earth a short while, you can breathe a big sigh of relief. After all, you only have to be the grand, the one who shines a light on all that’s good. You don’t have to shape and mold your little cherub because that’s not your job. You’re just the heart of gold, the voice of wisdom, the one who chases the kids all around the room, riles them up, and then leaves. After all, you don’t have to put them to bed. How grand is that?
The publisher of my book, It’s Still Possible decided to create a special ad for the book for Grandparent’s Day. It’s an awesome read for those who may have forgotten all the blessings God still intends to fulfill in their lives. In fact, it’s a grand book for a time such as this, so if you haven’t read it yet, give it a try. If you have read it, share it with a friend and let everyone know that you are still moving forward on the grandest adventure of your life. It’s exciting and fulfilling as long as you remember all things are possible with God!
Happy GRANDparent’s Day! You deserve a round of applause!
