Remember the busy signal you used to get on your old landline phone when your call was not picked up? You got a rather annoying beep and when you needed to speak with someone quickly, it was more than frustrating. When you pray over difficulties in life and you get no answer time after time, you can feel like all you get is a busy signal. You may begin to wonder if God is even there. “Hello, God, are you there?” Psalm 22:24 gives us a hint. It says, “He does not ignore those in trouble. He doesn’t hide from them but listens when they call out to Him.”

So now we’ve cleared that up and know God is always listening, what else can we do when we feel disconnected from Him? Let’s think about what happens when a phone call is dropped. It means that even though the other person is out there somewhere, your messages cannot get through to them. There may be no cell tower close by, the internet is down, or your friend just doesn’t pick up. It’s a rather urgent call and you feel alone and uncertain about what to do next.

As you wait for the lines of communication to open, one thing you can do is check your own system. Is the power off? You may want to check your spiritual system, your prayer frequency. Could it be you’ve put obstacles in the way? Have you given in to anxiety and worry to the place that any prayer feels empty? If so, take a rest and when you feel a bit stronger, try again. This time express your disappointment and uncertainty. Tell God you feel disconnected from His presence and His spirit. Open the airways of your mind so every syllable you utter goes directly from your lips to God’s ear.

God hears your heart and nothing can separate you from Him. He speaks all the time. One theologian wrote, “God never ceases to speak to us, but the noise of the world without, and the tumult of our passions within, bewilder us and prevent us from listening to Him.”

Be assured then that you and your Heavenly Father can never be disconnected. You can not be put on hold.  You’ll never get the message, “your call is important to us and will be answered in the order by which it was received.” God is there for you 24/7 and He answers heart to heart, one to one, and as quickly as possible.

God never disconnects from you. When you call Him with a humble heart, He will answer. Just be ready to listen.
